Squadron 42 vs Star Citizen: Campaign, Multiplayer and What You Can Play
A naval campaign or a life among other players? Understand the two games, check your access and find answers before choosing where to begin.
Squadron 42’s arrival on Steam has brought a familiar question to a fresh audience: is this Star Citizen, a part of Star Citizen, or something else entirely? The ships, uniforms and names look familiar because the games share a universe. What you do in that universe is different.
Squadron 42 is a single-player story campaign. Star Citizen is the online sandbox where players take on jobs, explore and fly together. A trailer showing a Gladius cockpit could belong comfortably beside footage from either, but one is selling the experience of serving in a naval story while the other gives you room to decide what kind of pilot to become.
| Question | Squadron 42 | Star Citizen |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of game is it? | A cinematic single-player campaign with spaceflight and first-person action. | An online space sandbox with activities, contracts and other players. |

| What sets the direction? | Your role in a naval story and its missions. | The work, destinations and activities you choose in the shared universe. |
| Can you play it now? | Not yet released; currently planned for Q2 2027. | Playable in alpha, with development and updates ongoing. |
Squadron 42: a place in the Navy
The campaign begins from a more defined position than an open-ended sandbox. You are stepping into a military setting with a cast, a story and missions built around that experience. It can move between the intimacy of a conversation aboard ship and the scale of a battle without asking a group of friends to assemble the scene first.
That is a large part of the appeal. The official material pairs cockpit action with first-person exploration and combat, and gives time to the people inhabiting those ships and stations. If what draws you to science fiction is the crew as much as the machinery, Squadron 42 is the project aimed most directly at that experience.

Single-player does not mean there is no room to explore a location. It describes who is playing the campaign, rather than proving that every mission is a corridor. Equally, impressive stations and wide environments should not be taken as a promise of Star Citizen’s open-ended multiplayer careers inside Squadron 42.
The current Steam listing identifies the game as single-player. There is no basis there for planning a co-op campaign with your organisation. If your priority is sharing a turret, mining run or cargo job with friends, Star Citizen is the relevant game.
Star Citizen: the evening is yours to arrange
Star Citizen starts from a different attraction: the freedom to pick a direction in a shared universe. You can haul cargo, recover wrecks, mine, race, hunt criminals or help another pilot. The official overview puts those activities alongside exploration, ship combat and fights on foot, with vehicles ranging from small solo craft to ships built around a crew.
The presence of other players changes the experience. A friend can take a turret while you fly, a group can organise an industrial operation, and an encounter on the route can upset the plan. Playing on your own is still a choice within that online world; it does not turn the game into an offline campaign.
That freedom also means you are not following Squadron 42’s authored naval journey. A cargo pilot, a medic and a fighter crew can have completely different evenings. Our first-session guide is a useful starting point if this is the side of the universe you want to try.
Shared ships do not make the games interchangeable
The visual connection is strong for a reason: the games inhabit the same science-fiction setting. Familiar ships and manufacturers help make the universe feel coherent. They are also why it is so easy to see a campaign clip and assume it shows a new feature already available in Star Citizen.
Keep the game attached to the footage. A Squadron 42 demonstration is evidence about that campaign, not proof that the same mission, interface or behaviour is on Star Citizen’s Live servers. Development links between the projects do not establish a release date for a particular feature in the other game.
The same care applies to performance. A campaign demonstration and a busy online session are different workloads. Neither a trailer nor a creator’s experience on a particular machine can guarantee how the other game will run on your PC.
Release, PC requirements and access
Squadron 42 is currently planned for the second quarter of 2027. Its Steam page is a pre-release listing, not a sign that the campaign can be downloaded and played today. Star Citizen remains available in alpha, with the usual distinction between the Live environment and separate testing builds.
The games also need to be treated separately when checking access. Do not assume a Star Citizen ship purchase includes Squadron 42, or that an existing campaign entitlement automatically provides a Steam key. The details of Steam entitlement fulfilment still need confirmation. The Steam page currently lists a third-party Star Citizen account requirement and supports account linking, but that alone does not answer every question about existing pledges.
We have covered the published hardware details, supported features and outstanding questions in Squadron 42 PC Requirements and Steam Features Explained. Use the specifications for the game you intend to play rather than assuming one set applies to both.
One universe, two kinds of adventure
The connection is more than familiar logos on spacecraft. Both projects come from Cloud Imperium Games and draw on the same fictional civilisation: its manufacturers, military, alien neighbours and places. Squadron 42 gives that setting a particular crew to follow. Star Citizen lets your own encounters become the stories you tell afterwards.
Development crosses between them, too. Star Citizen’s Alpha 3.23 patch notes explicitly described bringing Squadron 42’s EVA implementation into the multiplayer game. That is a concrete example of shared work reaching players, rather than a promise that every impressive moment in a campaign trailer will arrive in the next patch. Multiplayer integration still has its own demands.
The history of their packaging explains some of the confusion. Early access packages often included both experiences; the February 2016 split made separate access an option. An old account may therefore have both games, while a newer package may contain only one. The actual entitlement is what matters, not the age of the account or the ship pictured on its package.
Star Citizen and Squadron 42 FAQ
Is Squadron 42 the same game as Star Citizen?
No. They share a universe, but Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign and Star Citizen’s Persistent Universe is an online sandbox. Think of serving with a written naval cast in one, and finding your own work and companions in the other.
Do I need to play Star Citizen before Squadron 42?
There is no requirement to build a Star Citizen career before starting the campaign. Familiarity with its ships and terminology may make the setting feel more welcoming, but learning the multiplayer economy is not homework you must complete first. For a little background without campaign spoilers, start with our Vanduul history.
Can I play Star Citizen without Squadron 42?
Yes. Access to Star Citizen lets you play its available alpha without completing or owning the separate campaign. You can already fly, take contracts and join friends while Squadron 42 remains unreleased.
Does my Star Citizen package include Squadron 42?
Only if it includes the campaign entitlement. Expand the package’s contents in My Hangar and look for Squadron 42 Digital Download, alongside Star Citizen Digital Download if both are included. Do not infer campaign access from a ship, paint, insurance term or manual.
Where can I check which games my account owns?
In your RSI account, open My Hangar and then Game Access. Eligible pledges are listed separately for SC and SQ42 access. The Game Library under Account Settings also shows available games. The current protected-pledge selection period runs until 1 November 2026; review your selections before that deadline. A ship-only pledge does not become game access simply because it is valuable.
Can I play Squadron 42 with friends?
The current game is presented as single-player, not a co-op campaign. For evenings sharing a ship, taking different crew stations or meeting other pilots, choose Star Citizen. Older crowdfunding-era discussions should not be treated as a current co-op feature list.
Can I play Star Citizen solo or offline?
You can travel and take jobs alone in the Persistent Universe, but you are still in an online world with other players. Arena Commander is a separate distinction: it offers single-player and multiplayer modes, including some offline practice options. Those modes do not provide an offline copy of the whole Persistent Universe.
Will Squadron 42 work without an internet connection?
Single-player does not settle every connectivity question. The current Steam requirements include broadband internet and an RSI account. That does not establish a permanent online requirement, but it also does not guarantee a completely disconnected installation and play experience. The final activation and offline-play details still need clarification.
Can I download and play both games today?
Star Citizen is available in alpha through the RSI Launcher with suitable access. Squadron 42 is not yet available to play; its current planned window is Q2 2027, meaning April to June. That is a window, not a confirmed launch day. A Steam wishlist entry does not unlock the campaign.
Will owning Squadron 42 on my RSI account give me a Steam key?
Account ownership and Steam delivery are different questions. The Steam listing supports RSI account linking, but the sources checked for this guide do not establish how every existing entitlement will be fulfilled on Steam. Keep your existing entitlement and wait for explicit redemption instructions before assuming you need another copy.
Do ships, money or progress carry between the games?
Do not plan around a shared inventory. A ship in your Star Citizen hangar is not confirmation that you can select it for Squadron 42 missions. Earlier plans discussed campaign achievements affecting a later Persistent Universe career, but a current, complete transfer or reward specification has not been verified here. Particular unlocks need their own confirmation.
Will Squadron 42 run like Star Citizen on my PC?
Not necessarily. A campaign scene and a populated online environment are different workloads. Shared technology is no guarantee of matching frame rates, memory use or responsiveness. Check the requirements for each game; our Squadron 42 hardware guide explains the published PC listing without treating a minimum specification as a performance promise.
Is Arena Commander another name for Squadron 42?
No. Arena Commander is Star Citizen’s collection of flight, combat and racing modes, accessed through its main menu. It is useful for practice and shorter sessions, but it is not the separate story campaign.
What are Live and PTU, and are either the Squadron 42 beta?
Live is the main playable Star Citizen alpha environment. PTU stands for Public Test Universe, used to test Star Citizen updates before wider release. Neither label means you have downloaded Squadron 42. Check which game and test channel an announcement actually concerns.
Which experience sounds like your next evening?
If you want to follow a crew through a story, with a reason to care who makes it back aboard, Squadron 42 is the prospect to watch. If you want to turn up with friends and argue over whether to haul freight, go mining or take a fight, Star Citizen is already the place for that kind of evening. There is plenty of room to enjoy both without asking either to become the other.
