What to know

ArcCorp is a human business conglomerate that oversees a diverse set of industries, including manufacturing, mining, terraforming, and space exploration. Founded in 2687 as a deep-space exploration consortium, ArcCorp shifted to mining in the early 2700s and to fusion engine manufacture in the 2810s. Its fusion engine is the standard engine for spacecraft of 100 meters or more. After purchasing Stanton III from the United Empire of Earth (UEE) in 2865, ArcCorp developed the planet to support business and property interests, and by applying Xi'an urban development theory it became the most industrialized planet in the UEE.

History

ArcCorp was founded as a deep-space exploration consortium in 2687. Started in a Stor-All hangar by a group of friends, the company aimed to use its lone Zeus IV spacecraft to locate and catalog jump points for United Empire of Earth (UEE) bounty money. Pooling credits that included a lottery win and an unexpected inheritance, the quartet of friends began exploring the universe.

The venture had little success. Coming out of the turmoil of the 2690s, ArcCorp shifted from exploration, having accumulated a grand total of one jump license, to mining. During this period of rapid expansion, the corporation found significant success acquiring mineral rights to newly discovered planets. The renamed ArcCorp Mining Consortium soon became one of the most profitable companies in the galaxy, although the work was unrelated to the group's original purpose.

In the mid-28th century, ArcCorp first became involved with BCK, a massive terraforming conglomerate at the forefront of the then-lucrative trade. By then, ArcCorp had moved beyond mineral rights and was also dealing in planets for settlement. The synergy between the two companies was positive, resulting in record profits for both, as ArcCorp's salesmen could lock down rights to a planet and BCK could terraform it quickly and at low cost. As terraforming fell out of favor, ArcCorp absorbed BCK and the corporate structure it had used to help shape the modern galaxy. The acquisition was effectively a hostile takeover, with BCK's director accused of corporate malfeasance by a still-unidentified whistleblower. Many suspect that the company was brought down by its partner, but no evidence has ever surfaced.

In 2811, another change altered the destiny of ArcCorp. That year, looking to solve a problem with some of BCK's legacy orbital platforms, the company acquired an engine manufacturer called NovaLight. Staffed with excellent designers but lacking in business sense, NovaLight had a ready-to-go series of upgraded fusion engines but no ability to manufacture or sell them at scale. The buyout, initially seen by observers as an error, proved decisive. Within two quarters, ArcLight-branded fusion engines were profitable, and within five years they were the premier engine type for large spacecraft of 100 meters or more. ArcCorp fusion engines became the basis for the technology, the pattern from which competing designs are developed.

In 2865, ArcCorp purchased Stanton III from the UEE and developed the planet to support business and property interests. By applying Xi'an urban development theory, the planet quickly became the most industrialized planet in the UEE.

ArcCorp has become the definitive megacorporation, large enough to buy a planet (Stanton III). While the company still profits from a diverse set of industries relevant to its earlier days, including mining, some terraforming, and a newly relaunched exploration effort, it is known to most of the public for its fusion engines.

Reputation

ArcCorp has a reputation for employing low-cost labor. Its factory workers live, age, and die entirely within the ArcCorp system. What some describe as job security, others describe as indentured servitude: workers shop at company stores, live in company lodging, and spend their lives on fusion engine factory floors. Little money exits the cycle, and even those who retire generally remain within the ArcCorp system. The fate of ArcCorp's workforce is an ongoing social issue that periodically reappears in the headlines, usually following fusion line accidents or factory worker suicides. The company was three times voted the "Worst Company in the Universe" by Kaizen, and it does not comment on the issue officially or generally allow observers into its working facilities. ArcCorp's reputation has improved under recent CEO Anton Maxtin, with greater employee benefits, charitable events, and increased worker compensation for accidents on its factory floors. Although the company is further complying with UEE law, many people still hold a negative view of its reputation.

Jurisdiction

Travelers within ArcCorp-governed space are subject to local jurisdictional laws in addition to UEE laws. A violation of local laws, even an unknowing one, can result in expulsion, fines, arrest, or imprisonment.

As with UEE Military and Advocacy agents, local security personnel may require travelers to submit to identification scans to establish identity, may conduct searches of person and vessel, and may detain individuals with due cause.

ArcCorp enforces the laws of this jurisdiction within ArcCorp's gravitational sphere of influence, which includes its two moons, Lyria and Wala.
