Squadron 42 Comes to Steam with a Q2 2027 Release Window

The single-player campaign has a Steam listing, a new trailer and a release window shared by its official website.

Squadron 42 has arrived on Steam’s storefront, bringing the single-player campaign to a new audience with a planned release window of Q2 2027. The dedicated Squadron 42 website carries the same window alongside The Oath, its new trailer. After years of following the project through development reports and presentations, players now have a conventional Steam listing to follow.

The game itself is not available to play yet. Q2 means April to June 2027, rather than a specific launch day, and the listing still describes the release as planned. Even with that qualification, this is a substantial announcement: Squadron 42 now has its own Steam presence, a fresh public showcase and a clearer target for when the campaign should reach players.

A rookie pilot, a naval crew and a galactic war

The campaign puts you into the UEE Navy as a rookie, moving between fighter cockpits, capital ships, stations and frontier outposts. Flight combat and fighting on foot both form part of the adventure, with life alongside the crew connecting those encounters. Squadron 42 is being presented as a cinematic single-player game, so the Steam arrival should not be mistaken for an announcement that Star Citizen’s multiplayer universe has launched on the platform.

That distinction is especially useful for anyone discovering the project here for the first time. The appeal of Squadron 42 is a campaign with characters, missions and a place aboard a naval vessel. The official description emphasises living and working with the crew as well as fighting beside them; the new artwork makes room for conversations and interiors alongside the battles.

The Steam page names Cloud Imperium Games as developer and Roberts Space Industries as publisher. There are no Steam user reviews yet. The recent creator sessions are a separate source of early impressions, covered in our Manchester play-session report; they should not be confused with reviews of a released retail build.

Steam support comes with an RSI account requirement

The listing includes Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, HDR and Family Sharing, and explicitly requires a third-party Roberts Space Industries account with support for linking to Steam. Those are useful details for players wondering how the game will fit into their existing library.

For existing backers, however, the account-linking line leaves an important question unanswered. It does not establish that every existing Squadron 42 entitlement will receive a Steam key, nor explain how a legacy account entitlement would transfer. There is no reason to treat a platform listing as an instruction to acquire the game again. Clear entitlement guidance is needed before drawing that conclusion.

The same care applies to offline play. Single-player describes the campaign, while the PC requirements list a broadband connection. Neither line, on its own, explains when an internet connection will be required. The listing does not yet settle that question.

A new showcase, with the launch still ahead

The official site’s gallery ranges from a Gladius waiting in a hangar to cockpit combat, a vast dam, crew conversations and a close encounter with a Vanduul. It is a much broader introduction than a logo and a release window. For players who know the ships from Star Citizen, seeing them framed around a specific campaign gives familiar machinery a different context: a fighter is part of a pilot’s posting, a corridor belongs to a place the crew inhabits, and a station becomes somewhere the story can take you.

The announcement is worth enjoying on those terms. Steam provides a prominent new home for the game’s public information, but the gallery and trailer are still pre-release material. They cannot establish final performance, campaign length or the condition of the launch build.

For now, the concrete change is significant enough: Squadron 42 is listed on Steam, both official destinations point to Q2 2027, and a new collection of footage and screenshots is giving prospective pilots a closer look at the campaign they are waiting to play.

Existing-backer Steam entitlement and offline requirements remain unconfirmed in these sources. Official trailer and artwork: Cloud Imperium Games. No hands-on play is claimed.
