The program was originally created to help support NavJumpers searching for new systems throughout the verse, and was meant to encourage people to fill colony ships charted for new territories.
In 2412 the program was rebranded as Project Far Star and was given new life. Project Far Star was considered a key driver of the Human Colonial Expansion Era.
