History

Founder Gratia Katsaros, a business school graduate of Rhetor University, turned down offers from investment banks to join a crew of "turf-techs," 24th-century slang for the workers that terraforming companies hired to visit planets undergoing active terraforming. Part scientist and part repair technician, turf-techs took readings to track the terraforming process or repaired essential ground-based equipment. While suiting up for her first assignment, on Terra IV, team leader Clark Rissolo gave Katsaros some homemade protective gear, explaining that the company did not require it but that he wore it himself. During the assignment a sudden drop in air pressure preceded a cold wind, and a rock whipped up by the wind knocked Katsaros down before Rissolo pulled her to safety; she later found a rock embedded in the extra layer of armor he had given her. Katsaros recounted the assignment in her memoir, Protection for the People. She nicknamed the additional protective layers "Clark's defense system," and the experience pushed her to advocate for higher safety standards for turf-techs.

In 2539, Katsaros convinced Rissolo and several others to start a company manufacturing specialized environmental armor. The team established its operation in Najita on Keene, Kilian system, and named the company Clark Defense Systems (CDS) in honor of its inspiration. Shortly after the company launched its first line, the First Tevarin War broke out and the United Planets of Earth (UPE) needed combat armor. Slow sales of its environmental suits led CDS to apply for and win a military contract.

CDS refined its environmental suits to military standards and converted its production line to a range of field armor and combat undersuits. In 2546, with the UPE close to winning the First Tevarin War, government officials visited CDS headquarters and reported that its armor was among the most well-regarded equipment in the combat forces, with much of it reserved for special forces and personnel in the most dangerous areas. The officials offered CDS a large new contract to expand its military output. The company dedicated its resources to manufacturing combat armor and consulted veterans of the war on the features they valued in the field, work that led to some of its best-known armor lines, including the Omni-Role Combat (ORC) and Advanced Defensive Protection (ADP) series. The outbreak of the Second Tevarin War in 2603 brought a further increase in CDS government contracts and additional real-world testing. When that war ended in 2610, soldiers returned home praising a brand unavailable on the civilian market, which created a busy secondhand market for CDS armor.

With demand high, CDS considered moving into the private sector, but company executives were wary of being associated with the increasingly authoritarian Messer regime. When CDS lawyers looked for ways out of the exclusivity clause in its government contract, the regime declared the company's armor to be of strategic importance to the Empire and warned that any attempt to abandon its manufacturing commitment would lead to the UEE taking full control of the company, its facilities, assets, and patents. Documents released centuries later under the Historical Truth Act confirmed that none of the military armor, or modified versions of it, was permitted for public release. CDS dropped its plans and waited for the regime to pass.

By the late 28th century, Messer power had weakened enough for CDS to revive its expansion plans. In 2789, coinciding with the opening of the former military Castra system to the public, the company bought office and manufacturing space on Cascom (Castra II), intending to spin off a separate firm focused on civilian armor and shield it from government interference. Those plans became moot when the Messers fell in 2792. The new government under Imperator Erin Toi sought to cut ties with companies associated with the Messers, but evidence of the company's attempt to sever its contracts and the regime's takeover threats spared CDS the fate dealt to Aegis. The two sides agreed to reduce the size of the CDS contracts sharply while allowing the company to enter the civilian market with legacy versions of its combat armor.

In 2802, CDS moved its headquarters to Cascom, Castra system, and greatly increased its manufacturing capacity there. Most of its civilian operations are based on Cascom, while its facilities on Keene develop and supply the next generations of armor for the UEE military, an area in which the company continued to excel, as shown by the 2945 government contract to research and develop next-generation light armor. Today, Clark Defense Systems maintains a significant presence in both the civilian and government sectors and is considered by many to be a cornerstone company of the empire.
