MicroTech (company)
What to know
microTech is a human manufacturer of a variety of electronics, digital displays, software, and computers, including the mobiGlas wearable computer. Founded on Earth in 2782 by programmer Magnus Tobin, it is headquartered in New Babbage on the planet microTech, which the company privately owns. The planet's cold temperature is ideal for the company's heat-sensitive computing and manufacturing centers. Widespread use of its products has made it the largest computer and software developer currently operating in the United Empire of Earth (UEE). The current CEO is Jess Alfonz.

History
microTech was founded by Magnus Tobin, who was born on Earth in 2756 to a family that ran a prosperous textile manufacturing business. After overhauling the technical infrastructure of his family's company, Tobin rejected the role of heir apparent and instead convinced his parents to fund a small technology start-up that sold a modified version of his business software. microTech was incorporated in 2782 but struggled to turn a profit in its early years.
Tobin recruited his former mentor Aleena Tressler, whose contacts and business acumen brought the company more orders for custom software than it could handle, a position that helped it survive the economic upheaval that followed the overthrow of the Messer regime in 2792. To diversify, Tobin courted notable engineers and developers by guaranteeing them autonomy over their projects, while Tressler led an initiative to buy struggling businesses with valuable intellectual property. These acquisitions, including the education software producer Empiric Education, led to many of the company's signature products.
The company's flagship product grew out of its education software. An upgrade developed by Tobin included background software designed to manage the details of a student's life, and early adopters used these features well beyond studying. Developed into standalone software called Glas, it became one of the top productivity products on the market, though users had to carry both a datapad and a separate wearable computer to use all of its features. The breakthrough came when a malfunctioning simpod projected a small screen in front of Tobin's face, prompting microTech to build its own wrist-wearable hardware with Glas as a full operating system. Released in 2818, the mobiGlas became an instant success and the ubiquitous wearable worn across the empire.
Tobin reinvested the profits into a wide range of new devices, including a new simpod design and a line of ship computers, and bought large tracts of cheap real estate in cold biomes to house the company's growing server infrastructure. He later used the capital from selling that land for the purchase of Stanton IV. Tobin officially retired following the purchase but remained deeply involved in operations, overseeing the design and construction of New Babbage, the company's primary landing zone. After Tobin died in 2912, microTech continued to expand its product line and remained well positioned within the industry.
Among its subsidiaries, ship insurance company ProtLife operates under the microTech brand.
