Trade Compact / Living Marketplace

Banu Protectorate

In the crowded ports of Banu space, civilization sounds like bargaining, engine noise, temple bells, and the scrape of cargo crates. Humanity's first alien neighbors became known not through conquest, but through exchange, a culture where memory is useful only when it can guide a route, settle a debt, or close the next deal.

Banu first contact and trade routes
Chapter 01 / A missed shot

First contact became a trade route

The first Human encounter with the Banu began with error. Explorer Vernon Tar mistook an alien ship for a rival and opened fire. His shots missed, giving the United Nations of Earth time to send General Neal Socolovich and a delegation to turn near disaster into conversation.

The Banu pilot was later found to be a fugitive wanted over embezzled funds, a detail that reads like a warning label on future relations. Even so, the Interstellar Peace and Trade Accord followed, and the two civilizations began swapping information, technology, and opportunity.

As Banu worlds became better known to Humanity, the Protectorate emerged as a loose framework for a people who prefer practical coordination over central command.

Banu souli and marketplace culture
Chapter 02 / Life in the souli

A people measured by usefulness

To understand the Banu, begin with the souli. These guild-like, non-blood families shape work, identity, education, and reputation. A young Banu is raised inside a living trade organism, trained toward a craft, and measured by what they can contribute.

Their culture treats history differently than Humanity does. Dates and origins fade when they cannot help a deal, but routes, contracts, technologies, documents, and wanted lists survive because they are useful.

Even the question of a homeworld remains uncertain. Many in the UEE point to Bacchus II, site of species-wide Gatherings, but a Banu may name the world where they were born, the ship that carried them, or the souli that made them.

Religion

Cassa, patron of luck, and Taernin, the Great Traveler, are among the best-known deities. Trise is the spiritual center, while Bacchus II hosts major Gatherings.

Markets

Banu worlds are colorful, crowded, and risky. Nobles, criminals, pilgrims, tourists, and traders can share the same bazaar if the price is right.

Security

The Protectorate has no standing army. A rotating militia keeps order in peacetime, while local jurisdictions make extradition and pursuit difficult.

Chapter 03 / Commerce without innocence

Friendly does not mean simple

The Banu are friendly to Humans and Xi'an, and even their relationship with the Vanduul can remain commercially functional from world to world. In Banu space, trade often outlives grievance.

For Human visitors, that openness is both invitation and hazard. The same fractured jurisdictions that make Banu ports rich with goods and information also make them havens for fugitives, smugglers, and deals that disappear before the next shift of local law.
