Hunger and thirst, tracked in-game as Nutrition and Hydration, are survival mechanics in Star Citizen that require the player to eat food and drink drinks to stay healthy.

Nutrition and Hydration levels are shown on the mobiGlas personal status screen and at the bottom-left of the HUD. Both deplete over time and are replenished by consuming food and drink.

Consuming food and drink

Consumables are equipped from the player's inventory. Equipped food is usually eaten in a single bite, while beverages can be taken in small sips or in one continuous drink until the meter is empty. The player must remove their helmet before eating or drinking.

When Nutrition and Hydration are already full, consuming an item grants a reduced effect, so it is worth saving consumables until the player is genuinely hungry or thirsty.

Depletion and damage

As the levels fall, the player begins to suffer ill effects. If Nutrition or Hydration drops too low the player takes damage and will eventually fall unconscious; a death caused by depleted levels is recorded as "Malnutrition".

Ratings and effects

Most food carries a Nutritional Density Rating (NDR) and most drink a Hydration Efficacy Index (HEI); the higher the score, the more effectively the item restores hunger or thirst. Many items also carry one or more dietary effects that further modify the player's condition.
