Star Citizen 4.10.3 PTU: Vanduul Incursion, Skarnov and VR Changes
Nyx gets a new combat mission line, Lightning Bolt Co. brings an electrified DMR, and VR scope controls change again. Here’s what is available to test in 4.10.3.
Nyx’s next fight is taking shape. Alpha 4.10.3 brings Intersec Defence Solutions contracts against the Vanduul and Shattered Blade into the PTU, alongside a Lightning Bolt Co. rifle that can punish enemies standing too close together. For headset pilots, a separate developer update also brings welcome changes to scope zoom and third-person cameras.
These are PTU developments, not a new Live release. The official patch post currently lists Wave 1 access for build 4.10.3-PTU.12999338, released on 23 October. Its “US Only” entry describes the server region. Long Term Persistence is enabled, with stability, bug fixes and persistence between PTU releases among the testing priorities.
Intersec opens a new front in Nyx
Vanduul Incursion mixes ship combat with boarding and ground-team work. The mission line takes players into deep space and new combat locations, facing Blades, Glaives, Scythes, Stingers and other opposition. Shattered Blade forces complicate the picture: one assignment throws three hostile sides into the same encounter.
The range is more interesting than another set of identical bounty markers. There are auxiliary stations to clear, a boarded vessel to retake, escalating Vanduul waves and cryopods to recover. Higher difficulty tiers are intended for crews, while the harder contracts award blueprints spanning weapons, heavy armour and a flight suit.
Most of the line normally depends on completing the Vanduul Tech Smugglers work for Welcome To Nyx. The PTU lifts that prerequisite and makes all the contracts available, so access during testing should not be mistaken for the final progression route. Our 21 October roadmap coverage records the earlier commitment; this is the first playable test covered here.
The Skarnov puts electricity behind a full-auto DMR
Lightning Bolt Co.’s Skarnov can fire automatically or in single shots. Its distinctive trick is an electrified pulse that chains from the target to nearby enemies. That gives tightly grouped opponents a reason to spread out, although the weapon also brings strong vertical recoil and the risk of overheating.
Atmospheric temperature affects heat build-up: hot environments push it towards overheating faster, while cold conditions slow the accumulation. That describes how quickly heat builds, not a confirmed change to cooldown speed. The published test specifications include a 30-round magazine and a rate of 375 rounds per minute.
Where to find it on the PTU
- Area18: Cubby Blast.
- Grim HEX: Skutters.
- Levski: Conscientious Objects.
- Checkmate: the weapon shop.
Both the rifle and ammunition have been placed in these shops to make feedback easier during PTU testing. This does not establish the final Live acquisition route. It is also too early to call the Skarnov a new best-in-slot weapon: recoil, heat and the usefulness of chaining in an actual fight all matter more than its novelty.

VR gets separate ship and scope zoom controls
The 25 October VR update separates Scope Zoom Strength from Ship Zoom Strength, replacing the earlier combined Gameplay Zoom Strength setting. These sliders no longer alter Interaction Mode zoom. Third-person cameras also stop zooming the headset view in response to gameplay FOV changes, including ship ADS.
Scope eye relief changes with magnification, moving the view back along the scope as zoom increases. The transition is smoothed, while vehicle ADS and Interaction Mode are excluded from that eye-relief behaviour. The default minimum scope zoom, alignment and smoothing values have also been adjusted.
Two smaller changes should be particularly welcome in a headset: medical beds now default to an upward view rather than one aimed at the player’s body, and scope-texture banding has been fixed. The update also addresses crashes associated with experimental r_StereoDepthComposition. That option remains disabled by default; fixing a crash does not turn it into a required setting.
For the established controls and setup context, see our Star Citizen VR controls guide. The changes above belong to the 4.10.3 branch, so players staying on 4.10.2 should not expect the new controls to match their menus yet.
A combat update worth watching, with work still to do
The appeal is straightforward: more reasons for a combat crew to leave port, a new rifle with a recognisable personality, and practical headset fixes. The open question is how consistently those encounters and rewards will work once more players reach them. Wave 1 access is an invitation to test that, not evidence that every mission is ready for a reliable evening on Live.
