C8 vs C8X vs C8R Pisces: Cargo, Passengers or Rescue?

Anvil C8X Pisces flying through an asteroid field

Three small Anvil shuttles with different priorities: carrying a team, adding firepower or bringing a patient home.

A compact shuttle, a little more firepower or a medical bed: the Pisces family earns its place aboard a much larger adventure.

There is something wonderfully reassuring about a Pisces waiting at the bottom of a ramp. You can see the cockpit, the way out and most of the cabin in a glance. After navigating the corridors of a capital ship, Anvil's little shuttle feels almost disarmingly straightforward. It gets people and a modest load to places where bringing the mothership would be unnecessary work.

The three versions share that compact character, but their cabins and equipment serve different purposes. The C8 and C8X Expedition preserve room for freight and two passengers. The C8R Rescue gives up the cargo grid and one passenger seat for a medical installation. Choosing between them starts with who, or what, you expect to bring home.

Start with the cabin

The standard C8 carries 4 SCU and has two passenger jumpseats behind its single pilot. That makes it useful for a small away team with equipment, or for the errands that do not justify taking a larger ship out. The rear ramp is a large part of the appeal: boarding feels like walking into a small working vehicle, rather than climbing into a fighter and leaving everyone else outside.

Four SCU is a modest cargo allowance. It will not turn the Pisces into a serious bulk hauler, but preserving that space makes the C8 and C8X more flexible than the medical version for box handling. If the next trip might involve passengers, supplies or a small freight load, the open cabin is the feature you will appreciate most often.

The C8X keeps that same 4 SCU capacity and the two jumpseats. Its Expedition name does not mean an extra bedroom, a larger hold or a fundamentally different living arrangement. Both are short-trip ships without the bed and bathroom you would expect aboard something intended for prolonged independent expeditions.

What the C8X actually adds

The most obvious equipment difference is the gun count. A standard C8 has two Size 1 guns; the C8X has four. The additional pair gives the Expedition more forward firepower while leaving its passenger and cargo usefulness intact.

That is an appealing combination for a pilot who likes the Pisces as an everyday shuttle and would welcome some extra bite. It does not make the C8X a substitute for a dedicated combat fighter. Small weapons, light protection and a cabin full of people are good reasons to be selective about the fights you take.

There is also no need to imagine the C8X as the only version capable of leaving its carrier. All three current vehicle listings include a Size 1 quantum drive. The standard C8 can make its own quantum journeys, too; its association with the Carrack describes its intended working relationship, rather than a requirement to remain beside one at all times.

The C8R makes room for the patient

Open the Rescue's ramp and the reason for choosing it is immediately visible. A Tier 3 medical bed occupies the space that would otherwise help the little shuttle carry freight. One jumpseat remains for an attendant. You can bring a patient aboard and have someone accompany them, but the medical cabin is not the standard cargo cabin with a bed casually dropped into it.

Its small size makes the C8R particularly attractive as a medical companion to a larger vessel. The Pisces was designed around the Carrack's hangar, and the Rescue retains that relationship. It can also be flown independently. For players who regularly leave their ship on foot, having a medical bed nearby can be a much stronger reason to own a Pisces than the Expedition's extra guns.

The bed needs to be understood on current rules. Tier 3 beds support regeneration within 50 kilometres, provided the bed has been selected as the regeneration point and remains functional with enough MedGel. That is useful local support, not a system-wide safety net. If the ship is destroyed, the bed lacks supplies or you are out of range, the nearby respawn you were relying on may not be available.

Treatment and regeneration are separate functions. A medical bed's presence does not mean every injury can be handled in the same way, and the current medical guidance distinguishes treatment by severity. The C8R's essential job is still getting medical support close to a patient and moving them safely when more care is needed. Choose the trip you actually make

For ferrying two friends and a small load, the standard C8 already does the important work. The C8X suits the same routine when you want the additional guns. If your evenings revolve around rescue or supporting people on foot, the C8R's bed is a more meaningful addition than the cargo space it replaces.

These are separate variants. You cannot turn a C8X into a C8R simply by swapping its interior as though it were a removable mission module. Nor does choosing the Rescue bring heavier armour than the rest of the family. A small ambulance is still a small ship, and putting a patient aboard makes getting clear of danger more important than proving it can stay in a fight.

We like the Pisces because it makes small trips feel worth taking. It is easy to admire the Carrack for everything it promises a crew, but the little shuttle is the part that gets them down to the surface together. Pick the cabin that suits those journeys, and the differences between the three become much easier to appreciate.
