Lightning Bolt Co.

Lightning Bolt Co. is a human manufacturer of energy weapons based in the Magnus system. It was founded in 2921 by Irina Arkadova, the CEO of a private military company, and produces both spacecraft and personal energy weapons designed primarily for security professionals. Its first product, the Mayak range of hardened electron cannons, proved popular among security operators and allowed the company to expand into specialized personal weapons.

History

Before founding Lightning Bolt Co., Arkadova ran a private security force out of Odyssa in the Magnus system. Her team built a reputation in the VIP protection industry for being effective but quick to escalate confrontations. One assignment played out live across the spectrum as Odyssa residents watched the team defend their clients through a series of armed attacks. The subsequent investigation linked the clients to the Otoni Syndicate, though Arkadova cited non-disclosure agreements and authorities closed the case for lack of evidence.

Arkadova traced her interest in weapon design to a firefight in which her laser rifle lost power while she was pinned down. After surviving with the help of her team, she dismantled the defective weapon, and Biagio Bhandari, a fellow mercenary and former Drake Interplanetary engineer, diagnosed the failure. The discussion that followed convinced Arkadova that knowing what not to do was half the work of weapon design.

In 2921, Bhandari approached Arkadova with a new electron cannon design. He had illustrated the weapon's power with a few sketched lightning bolts, and Arkadova named the venture Lightning Bolt Co. in honor of the flourish. The two refined the prototype over a five-year iterative process. To fund the first production run of Mayak electron cannons, Arkadova offered her security team shares in the company in exchange for capital, which allowed her to double the initial run. The weapons sold well by word of mouth among mercenaries in Magnus, and the resulting orders led Arkadova to leave mercenary work and become a full-time weapons manufacturer. She completed the transition of her crew into the new company by 2932.

The Atzkav sniper rifle, the company's first mass-produced personal weapon, followed and became a favorite among security professionals. The Yubarev pistol, which used the same charged electron technology, arrived the following year and established the company's reputation for precision energy weapons.
