History
The company traces its origins to Claude Gadkari, a middle-class native of New Junction in the Corel system who left home as a trainee aboard a salvage crew that turned out to be running smuggling operations. During a run to Olympus in the Nul system, Gadkari bought a set of custom armor from a stall vendor, pieces that combined repurposed ship plating with reinforced polymer fabrics. The suit drew frequent compliments and purchase offers over the years, which convinced Gadkari that he could build something similar himself.
Gadkari returned to Olympus to find the original armorer, but the vendor had fled the system following a dispute with Nescus, the crime lord who controlled the area. Unable to locate the vendor, Gadkari searched bazaars across the systems while running legitimate cargo to make ends meet. In Nexus he met Heizo Tam, who ran a small armor repair stand and offered to repair Gadkari's suit in order to study how it was made. The two formed a partnership: Tam would source raw materials and craft the suits, while Gadkari would provide capital and handle distribution. They named the company Tehachapi after the lost Olympus vendor.
Tehachapi's first official armor set, the Aztalan, sold slowly at first. Gadkari found success selling directly at bazaars but struggled to interest established retailers, and Tam went into debt to keep the production lines running. The company neared bankruptcy until 2946, when Gadkari supplied armor as a costume option for the Spectrum show Shadow Siren. The series became a hit, and its mysterious rogue character, Déraciné, was depicted wearing Tehachapi armor. Sales rose sharply, and cross-promotions with the show and Drake Interplanetary, another brand featured in it, further raised the company's profile.
