Anvil Aerospace: The Complete History
Founded on Terra in 2772, Anvil Aerospace built its name on military spacecraft. Discover how the F7C Hornet transformed this iconic Star Citizen manufacturer.
Anvil Aerospace began with a failed Aegis prototype, the design philosophy of a dead aerospace pioneer and J. Harris Arnold’s conviction that a better ship company could be built on Terra. Nearly two centuries later, that lineage runs from the Osprey prototype and Terrapin to the Hornet, Lightning and Odin.
This is the complete published history of Anvil Aerospace as CIG currently tells it: the people and companies that shaped its design language, the military contracts that made it indispensable, the civilian decision that transformed its business and the places where official canon remains incomplete or contradictory.
01. Before Anvil: Leonard Casse and J. Harris Arnold
Anvil was founded in 2772 in Nova Kyiv on Terra, but its visual identity reaches back more than a century to Leonard Casse. Curved wings and the open-circle signet associated with Casse Aerospace became part of Anvil’s design language through Arnold’s admiration, a lawsuit and an eventual portfolio acquisition.
Leonard Casse founded Casse Aerospace in 2599 after leaving RSI. His company produced the Cosmo Sloop and, in 2607, the Hurricane fighter before his death in 2615. Casse Aerospace closed in 2623, but its ships and design rights survived as a portfolio held by an investment firm.
Jude “J” Harris Arnold was born on Terra in 2742 and studied at the Martian Institute of Space Technology, where Casse’s work influenced him. Arnold joined Aegis Dynamics as a junior designer in 2763 and later worked on Project Monitor, the programme that became the Hammerhead. One of his prototypes failed early flight tests, and repeated rejection of later ideas convinced him that he had no future at Aegis.
Arnold left Aegis in 2770. With a seed loan from his parents, he planned a manufacturer using the flat organisational ideas associated with Casse Aerospace: every opinion could be heard, but final design authority would remain with Arnold.

Construction of Anvil’s Nova Kyiv facility was complete in 2772. Within its first year, Arnold’s team produced the Osprey, a prototype fighter that deliberately used Casse-inspired curves and circular motifs. Arnold presented it to Navy officials through contacts from his Aegis years, and CIG’s biography of Arnold says the demonstration earned Anvil its first Navy order.
The resemblance to Casse’s work also brought a copyright infringement lawsuit from the firm that controlled the defunct manufacturer’s rights. Arnold settled the dispute by purchasing the entire Casse Aerospace portfolio in 2784. That transaction explains an important detail in the modern catalogue: the Hurricane is manufactured by Anvil today, but it originated as a Casse Aerospace fighter in 2607.
The Osprey is a canon historical prototype and the earliest ship associated with Anvil. It is not a current flyable or announced production ship. Its importance is corporate: it won early Navy attention and triggered the dispute that brought Casse’s portfolio into Anvil.
03. 2792–2853: Terrapin, Hornet and the Arnold era
The fall of the Messer regime created Anvil’s next opening. In 2792, the UEE stripped Aegis Dynamics of most of its contracts and restructured Navy procurement around protecting the civilian population. Vice Admiral Galen Whishaw approached Anvil with a direct development contract that produced the U4A-3 Terrapin, an armoured deep-space scout deployed in 2796.
Arnold’s official biography says the Osprey earned Anvil’s first Navy order in 2772. The Terrapin’s Galactapedia entry calls the Terrapin Anvil’s first military contract. CIG has not fully reconciled those descriptions. The safest distinction is to describe the Osprey as the first Navy order and the Terrapin as the first named direct-development military contract, while acknowledging that this is an interpretation of conflicting official wording.
Arnold and lead engineer Allegra Wilsing had already been developing ideas that became the Terrapin. Its successful deployment helped make Anvil indispensable to UEE defence, and Arnold personally supervised the company’s military projects for decades afterward.
The defining product of that era was the F7A Hornet. The Mk I entered service in 2806 and replaced the Aegis Avenger as the UEE’s standard front-line fighter. CIG’s current Galactapedia describes the F7A as the Navy’s baseline space-superiority fighter, deployed across the Empire’s spacecraft carriers for patrol, interception, ground attack, reconnaissance, escort and strike operations.
Arnold entered semi-retirement in the early 2840s but continued approving changes across Anvil’s projects. He remained involved with Navy leadership and the company until his death at his desk in Nova Kyiv in 2853. Anvil’s later requirement that a standing CEO approve spacecraft alterations preserves that founder-led obsession with design control.

05. 2923: The F7C turns a military institution into a civilian brand
Anvil resisted the civilian market for generations. Company leaders feared that public versions of military designs would dilute its position at the tip of the spear. The debate became serious enough that a separate civilian organisation licensing Anvil designs was considered, until the UEE government supported supplying military-styled equipment to frontier populations.
The F7C Hornet became Anvil’s first civilian spacecraft in 2923. It was not created by removing a classified label and changing the paint. UEE secrecy restrictions required Anvil to replace roughly 60 percent of the F7A’s internal hardware, while the underlying frame remained unchanged.
That affected obvious systems such as weapons, but the restriction also reached apparently mundane parts. Civilian design teams sometimes had to replace systems without being allowed to inspect the military originals. CIG’s example goes as far as cockpit seals and pedal hardware, underlining how much of a military platform could be protected even when the function seemed harmless.

The commercial result settled Anvil’s internal debate. The official portfolio states that profits rose 34 percent after the F7C’s release. The civilian Hornet did not dilute the brand; it turned access to a military silhouette into a status symbol. Frontier militias saw rugged defensive hardware, while affluent buyers saw proximity to the Navy’s fighter mystique.
The 34 percent profit increase comes from CIG’s in-universe portfolio. The 2923 release date, first-civilian-ship status and 60 percent hardware replacement are also stated in the current F7C Galactapedia entry. None should be read as present-day pledge-store data.
06. From fighter company to full-spectrum manufacturer
Anvil remains fighter-led, but “the Hornet company” is no longer a complete description. Its published catalogue now covers reconnaissance, exploration, transport, medical support, vehicle deployment and ground warfare. The groups below are representative families, not a complete ship-specification list.
The F7 established Anvil as a Navy institution and later opened the civilian market. The F8A, released in 2933, is its heavier next-generation successor.
The armoured Terrapin began the post-Messer contract era. The Carrack extends Anvil into long-duration exploration, supported by the compact Pisces family.
The Gladiator serves the bomber role, while the Hurricane is a modern Anvil-built strike fighter whose design lineage began with Casse Aerospace.
The Liberator light carrier moves ships and vehicles. The Spartan personnel carrier and Ballista missile platform extend Anvil’s military identity onto the ground.

07. The Osprey and Devastator problem
CIG’s Anvil portfolio lists the Hurricane, Osprey, Devastator, Hornet and Gladiator as historic Anvil-associated spacecraft. Those names do not all have the same status, and presenting them as equivalent would be misleading.
The founder biography and Anvil Galactapedia identify the Osprey as Anvil’s earliest prototype fighter. It has a place in company history but is not a current production or flyable ship.
The Devastator is only name-checked in the portfolio. CIG’s Loremakers later said it had not been mentioned elsewhere and that the name could be reused if a suitable future Anvil design appears.
08. 2933–2956: Lightning, Hornet Mk II and Odin
The F8A Lightning entered service in 2933 as a next-generation, single-seat heavy fighter intended to succeed the F7A and counter modern Vanduul fighters. CIG describes its use as restricted to elite Navy squadrons, with wider adoption expected over time. The civilian F8C later carried the Lightning silhouette into public hands.
In 2944, the F7A Hornet Mk II updated Anvil’s most important military family rather than replacing its identity. By 2956, the company’s ambitions extended far beyond a carrier’s fighter wing. DefenseCon revealed the Anvil Odin, which CIG describes as a massive battlecruiser.
The strongest part of Anvil’s identity is continuity. A Hornet, Carrack, Pisces and Liberator do not share a mission, yet each treats the mission as the reason for the ship. Casse’s curves, Arnold’s approval culture and generations of military procurement still connect machines built for entirely different jobs.
The bottom line: Anvil did not become one of Star Citizen’s most recognisable manufacturers through the Hornet alone. Its complete history begins with Leonard Casse, passes through Arnold’s failed Aegis career and the Osprey, accelerates through the Terrapin and F7A, changes commercially with the F7C, and reaches the modern era through the Lightning and Odin. The company’s real through-line is not a single ship—it is the belief that military purpose should remain visible in every design.
