Inside Star Citizen: Alpha 4.8 Patch Report Teases Tactical Strike Groups
PATCH PREVIEW
ALPHA 4.8 — TACTICAL STRIKE GROUPS, DEFENSECON, AND THE ROAD TO 4.9
Alpha 4.8 arrives next week, and it is the most content-dense combat-focused patch Star Citizen has seen in some time. Tactical Strike Groups leads the charge as the patch's central feature, but the release is far from a single-note drop. Ship Hangar Services, new refueling missions, the long-awaited Caterpillar command module, new FPS gear, and the DefenseCon 2956 event all land alongside it. Here is everything confirmed for the release.
TACTICAL STRIKE GROUPS
TSG is the centerpiece of 4.8 and the most significant step yet toward cooperative spaceship PvE in Star Citizen. The first mission scenario drops us into an active engagement: a People's Alliance Idris is locked in combat with a Vanduul tech-theft group known as the Shattered Blade — the same faction players have been tracking since Stormbreaker. They have taken hostages and fortified a previously abandoned extraction station. The objectives layer sequentially: clear the enemy forces, disable or survive the station turrets, fly inside to bring down the power, then board and recover the hostages.

It does not end there. A massive Vanduul Mauler arrives once the primary objectives are complete, and it is not making any careful distinctions between the humans in its path. Whether to extract or hold the ground is the player's call.

CIG are framing TSG not as a one-off mission release but as a new content benchmark — a foundation to build on with subsequent patches, comparable to how mining operations, contested zones, and racing events have grown over time. The intent is to keep expanding the format as the universe moves toward 1.0.
SHIP HANGAR SERVICES
One of the key new features landing alongside TSG is Ship Hangar Services — the ability for select large ships to offer repairs, refueling, and rearming to any ship that lands in their bays, provided the host has the required stock aboard. The feature applies to obvious candidates like the Idris and Polaris, but also extends to the Carrack, the Starlancer Attack, and civilian vessels like the 600i and 890 Jump.

The practical implications for fleet coordination are considerable, particularly in the context of sustained TSG-style operations where a supporting capital ship can keep combat-ready allies in the fight rather than pulling them out of the engagement to restock at a station.
REFUELING MISSIONS
Alpha 4.8 gives Starfarer owners and other fuel-capable pilots their first proper incentive structure with the introduction of NPC refueling missions. When an NPC runs dry, it generates a mission that sends us out to locate and assist them for a reward — a straightforward career loop that has been missing from the refueling side of the game since the gameplay launched.

A second, smaller fuel-capable ship was teased alongside the Starfarer as an eligible vessel for these missions. No name was confirmed at time of broadcast, but it appeared briefly in the Inside Star Citizen preview footage.
CATERPILLAR COMMAND MODULE
The Drake Caterpillar finally gets its long-promised command module functionality in 4.8. The detachable module allows the captain to leave the ship docked or planetside while the crew continues operations independently — a genuine multi-crew tactical option, and a creative workaround for Drake's longstanding stance on escape pods.

Two additional unannounced vehicles launching in 4.8 will also ship with command module functionality, though CIG offered no further details on what those vehicles are.
NEW FPS ADDITIONS
Alpha 4.8 adds several new items to the personal loadout options available to us. Kastak Arms plasma grenades bring a new explosive to the field. G-force resistant flight suits offer an alternative to heavier armors for pilots who expect to be pulling hard maneuvers — a relevant consideration as the flight experience continues to develop. The headlining addition is the UltiFlex Novia Crossbow, a retro-inspired precision weapon for players who prefer a quieter, more deliberate approach to handling threats at range.
DEFENSECON 2956
With Invictus in the rearview, DefenseCon 2956 steps in as the month's combat-focused sales event — celebrating the fighters and defenders of the verse outside the formal UEE Navy framework and leaning into attitude over ceremony.

The ship lineup confirmed for the event spans a wide range of combat roles. The Drake Pitbull brings aggressive firepower in a compact hull. The Origin M80 makes a visual statement alongside its combat credentials. The MISC Starlite proves the event is not exclusively about weapons, offering a support-focused option in the lineup. The Aegis Tibberon rounds out the new reveals with a predatory design profile. The Drake Caterpillar and Drake Ironclad Assault are also featured — the Ironclad Assault notably shipping with Ship Hangar Services, positioning it as both a combat platform and a fleet support asset.

The Caterpillar and Ironclad Assault were scheduled to enter PTU for existing owners on May 11, ahead of the full event launch.
THE ANVIL ODIN
The Anvil Odin Battlecruiser makes its concept debut at DefenseCon 2956. CIG confirmed it is twice the size of a Javelin — making it the largest ship the studio has attempted to put in players' hands. Details beyond that were not shared at broadcast, with first glimpses available through the weekly newsletter, social media, and discoverable in the PTU ahead of the full reveal.
ALPHA 4.81 THROUGH 4.83
Like 4.7 before it, Alpha 4.8 carries into a series of point releases over the weeks following launch. Alpha 4.8.1 brings additional Defend Location missions. Alpha 4.8.2 hosts Alien Week. Alpha 4.8.3 sees the return of XenoThreat — whose timing immediately after a pro-alien celebration week was noted without much further commentary. The full 4.8 content window is expected to carry through to Alpha 4.9 in July.
THE 2026 DEVELOPMENT SLATE
CIG shared a high-level view of what the rest of 2026 is building toward. Planned for the remainder of the year: a fully instanced and reworked Siege of Orison, Genesis-built planets for the Nyx system, StarWear and Starchitect integration, a large multi-staged Municipal Works operation, new ships and vehicles across multiple releases, and continued gameplay and quality-of-life improvements. Squadron 42 remains a major parallel focus throughout the year. The apex sand valakkar was also flagged as something that could surface at any point — which, given its size, feels like an appropriate way to describe it.
CITIZENCON 2026 — CIG confirmed there will be no CitizenCon event in 2026 in any format — in-person, digital, or Direct. The decision was described as a reflection of how much is underway across both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 this year and the importance of keeping development momentum uninterrupted. The Bar Citizen World Tour continues as the community meetup alternative, with CIG staff attendance at various stops throughout the year.
