Star Citizen VOIP and FOIP: Fixing Microphones and Face Tracking
Silent comms or a face that will not move? Check microphone routing, channel settings and webcam calibration without confusing facial tracking with camera control.
A silent microphone and an unresponsive character face need different checks. VOIP carries your voice; FOIP uses a webcam and Faceware to animate facial expressions. Freelook controls where you look. Start with the feature that is failing rather than changing all three sets of options.
When other players cannot hear you
- In Windows sound settings, select the intended microphone as the input device.
- Check the in-game push-to-talk binding for conflicts. The default is Numpad +; a custom profile may differ.
- Open mobiGlas Comms, select the intended channel and enable its microphone icon.
For low voice volume, open Windows Sounds → Communications, select Do Nothing and apply the change.
Check the channel before speaking. Local or general voice can reach other players within comms range who share that channel. For a private call, parties or blocking, follow our Friends and comms guide.
Get facial tracking calibrated
Open Options → Comms, FoIP, & Head Tracking. Under Faceware, set Enable FOIP (Facial tracking) to Yes, choose the webcam and camera mode, then select Calibrate. Recommended modes carry an asterisk and depend on detected hardware.
Frame your whole face, from forehead to jaw. Use even lighting without deep shadows, harsh highlights or glare on glasses. Keep your lips and eyebrows visible. Calibrate with a neutral expression while looking slightly below the lens, towards your normal play position.
Orange facial dots do not establish success: the preview must say Calibrated: True. If it says False, improve lighting and recalibrate.
If the camera still loses you
The recommended webcam specification is 60 fps, at least 640 × 480 and MJPG. If autofocus repeatedly breaks tracking at 60 fps, disable autofocus or try a 30 fps mode. Auto-exposure can also interfere with calibration.
For an upside-down image, adjust camera rotation in Comms settings. If the wrong camera is being used, check the selected webcam before calibrating again. External zoom adjustments may not carry into the game.
